What this role is
Supervises a crew of pipeline technicians and operators performing construction, inspection, and maintenance of oil and gas pipelines. At the Manager (Team Lead) (M1) level, the role owns a single team, day-to-day delivery and people issues, and drives team output and health. Direct people management of one team.
What this level does
- Supervises a shift crew of pipeline operators monitoring flow, pressure, and temperature and responding to SCADA system alarms during the shift
- Directs daily field activities including scheduled pipeline inspections, valve adjustments, leak detection, and pig launching/receiving on an assigned line segment
- Verifies that lockout/tagout procedures and safety documentation are completed correctly for all crew maintenance and inspection tasks
- Ensures operators document all activities, verify equipment operation, and follow established operating procedures within the shift
- Escalates abnormal conditions (pressure excursions, leaks, alarm floods) to on-call engineering and maintenance per established response protocols
- Knowledge applied
- Applies functional expertise in pipeline monitoring, valve operation, and safety procedures to run daily operations of a shift crew; follows established practices for alarm response and maintenance.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Handles limited-scope, recurring operational problems — alarm response, leak detection, minor equipment issues — using established procedures and escalation paths.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Daily interaction with shift operators and peer supervisors; coordinates with maintenance and on-call engineering as issues arise.
- Typical experience
- Functional expert in pipeline operations (SCADA, pigging, leak detection) with some leadership exposure.
Skills at this level
- SCADA monitoring and alarm response
- — Monitors pipeline flow, pressure, and temperature through SCADA and directs response to system alarms and field compressor status.
- Valve and pumping operations
- — Directs operation of valves, actuators, and pumps as part of pumping and pipeline operations, including adjustments to maintain flow and pressure.
- Pigging operations
- — Oversees safe launching, receiving, and inspection pigging of pipelines by field crews.
- Leak detection and integrity monitoring
- — Directs leak detection, scheduled pipeline inspections, and use of real-time hydraulic/line-pack models to identify and mitigate integrity risks.
- Lockout/tagout and safety procedure enforcement
- — Ensures lockout/tagout procedures and safety protocols are followed and documented during all maintenance and inspection work.
- Regulatory compliance for pipeline operations
- — Ensures pipeline systems are operated in compliance with company policies and applicable local, state, and federal rules across transmission and gathering systems, maintaining pipeline-safety certifications.
- Equipment maintenance planning
- — Plans and coordinates upkeep and replacement of pipeline valves, actuators, pumps, liquid handling equipment, and pigging facilities.
- Mechanical troubleshooting
- — Applies working knowledge of pipeline equipment to diagnose and resolve common mechanical problems such as leaks and pump repairs.
- Throughput optimization
- — Coordinates maintenance crews, safety inspectors, and engineers to mitigate risk while optimizing pipeline throughput.
- Operator training and development
- — Trains and qualifies pipeline operators on operating policies, procedures, and systems before independent assignment.
- Process improvement in pipeline operations
- — Implements best practices to improve pipeline operations, reliability, and cost performance.
- Complex project direction
- — Develops, coordinates, and directs large or complex field engineering assignments and integrity projects across line segments.
