What this role is
Executive leader responsible for setting strategic direction and overseeing operations for pharmacy services across the organization. At the Director (Executive) (E1) level, the role owns a significant function with strategic authority, strategic and cross-functional, and drives function-wide enterprise impact. Executive leadership of a function.
What this level does
- Lead the retail pharmacy sub-function for a region or division through Pharmacy Managers (M5-equivalent), holding them to the full-site results the evidence names — customer service, sales, gross-margin improvement, inventory purchasing/management, expense control and staff development — across all in-store pharmacies in scope
- Standardize how sites operate the pharmacy management systems, multiple pharmacy system applications and bar-code/automation tools so data entry, retrieval, dispensing and cycle-count discrepancy resolution are accurate and consistent across the network
- Own controlled-substance governance and prescription-file integrity across sites, ensuring the bench-level legality checks (physician name/address, patient details) and dosage-verification standards are enforced everywhere
- Standardize third-party-payer/insurance-claims workflows so patient-eligibility verification, billing and coverage troubleshooting are handled consistently and cost-effectively across stores
- Build the succession pipeline of future Pharmacy Manager candidates through continual evaluation, training and development of retail pharmacy staff, protecting the on-the-job training and certification pathway that feeds safe dispensing capacity
- Knowledge applied
- Applies deep retail-pharmacy functional knowledge — dispensing legality, controlled-substance handling, third-party payer/claims, pharmacy systems, inventory and expense levers — to run a complete sub-function through Pharmacy Managers, with detailed knowledge of how the store-pharmacy business actually operates at the bench.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Owns functional strategy for a regional pharmacy network; resolves problems with serious functional and business consequences such as network-wide compliance gaps, staffing shortfalls or margin erosion.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Interfaces with other executives and major payer/supplier partners; represents pharmacy operations up to store-operations leadership.
- Typical experience
- 12–15+ years of pharmacy and management experience, typically including bench practice and Pharmacy Manager full-site ownership.
Skills at this level
- Pharmacy software & data-entry accuracy
- — Operating pharmacy software, entering and retrieving information accurately across multiple pharmacy system applications, and interpreting and following dispensing instructions while maintaining an organized workspace.
- Regulatory compliance
- — Operating within legal frameworks and ensuring compliance with local, state, federal and company regulations, maintaining prescription files and controlled-substance paperwork to auditable standards.
- Controlled-substance & prescription legality verification
- — Enforcing legality checks on prescriptions — physician name, business address, phone, patient details — and verifying dosage instructions before dispensing, and governing controlled-substance handling and record integrity across sites.
- Insurance/third-party claims literacy
- — Verifying patient eligibility with third-party payers, processing insurance claims and billing, and troubleshooting coverage issues so prescriptions are dispensed and reimbursed correctly.
- Inventory & expense management
- — Monitoring stock levels, placing supplier orders, tracking expiration dates, running cycle counts with discrepancy resolution, and controlling purchasing cost, gross margin and pharmacy expense across the site or network.
- Pharmacy automation & bar-code systems
- — Using bar-code scanning and pharmacy automation systems to speed and de-risk the dispensing and inventory workflow, and setting standards for their consistent use across stores.
- Patient-facing customer service
- — Providing the direct patient-facing service central to retail pharmacy — answering questions, resolving coverage and prescription issues at the counter, and promoting health-care programs to patients.
- Retail pharmacy operations management
- — Owning full-site pharmacy operations — customer service, sales, gross-margin improvement, inventory, expense control and staff development — while sustaining bench practice, since retail pharmacy management is additive to, not a replacement for, dispensing work.
- Pharmacy staff development & succession
- — Continually evaluating, training and developing retail pharmacy staff across floater/staff/manager positions and building the pipeline of future Pharmacy Manager candidates.
- Payer & supplier negotiation
- — Negotiating reimbursement terms with major third-party payers and purchasing terms with wholesale drug suppliers that set the cost and revenue basis for the store-pharmacy network.
