What this role is
Executive who leads the company's mining operations business line, overseeing production, safety, and site performance across sites. At the Director (Executive) (E1) level, the role owns a significant function with strategic authority, strategic and cross-functional, and drives function-wide enterprise impact. Executive leadership of a function.
What this level does
- Lead all day-to-day mining activities for a single operating mine or sub-function, ensuring safe, efficient and disciplined execution across Mining, Drill & Blast, Planning and Maintenance through the Mining Superintendents (M5s) who report to you
- Own operational decision-making to consistently achieve production, safety and cost objectives, translating the site's strategic objectives into operational execution across production planning, material extraction, hauling and stockpile management
- Drive operational discipline through structured Management Operating System (MOS) routines — daily production meetings and short interval control — and hold superintendents and contractor teams accountable through structured operating rhythms
- Manage the mine's operating budget and multi-million-dollar assets, interfacing with peer executives and major contractors where poor execution carries serious functional and production consequences
- Ensure the safety and health of mine workers and full HSE/regulatory compliance across the operation, embedding operational excellence as the standard of work
- Knowledge applied
- Applies deep mining operations expertise — underground/surface methods, drill & blast, development sequencing, maintenance and MOS discipline — plus detailed knowledge of the single mine's cost drivers and constraints, usually backed by a mine engineering degree and statutory competency.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Sets the functional operating strategy for one mine and resolves day-to-day execution problems where getting production, cost and safety right has serious consequences for the site.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Interfaces with peer site executives, major contractors and support functions; leads through Mining Superintendents (M5s).
- Typical experience
- ~10–15+ yrs mining operations including superintendent-level roles and a relevant statutory competency; extensive open-pit / drill & blast / production management experience.
Skills at this level
- Mining engineering knowledge
- — Understands underground and surface mining methods, development sequencing and operational constraints, and applies them to set feasible production strategy; typically underpinned by a mine engineering degree and statutory competency.
- Management Operating System (MOS) discipline
- — Establishes and runs structured operating rhythms — daily production meetings and short interval control — to drive accountability and consistent achievement of production, safety and cost objectives across mining teams.
- Executive people leadership
- — Leads other leaders — Mining Superintendents, multidisciplinary teams and contractor crews — through frontline operational leaders, translating strategic objectives into disciplined day-to-day execution.
- Commercial and margin thinking
- — Interprets operational data to improve commercial outcomes and understands how production and digital systems affect margin and risk, managing the wider operating model and cost base.
- ESG and reputational risk management
- — Aligns mining operations with ESG strategy and manages reputational risk alongside operational risk at the executive level, protecting the license to operate.
- Production and cost planning
- — Establishes production schedules and operational priorities across extraction, hauling and stockpile management, and owns the operating budget to deliver production targets at controlled unit cost.
- HSE and regulatory compliance leadership
- — Embeds company HSE policies and procedures and ensures compliance with mining safety regulation across operations, safeguarding the safety and health of mine workers.
- Multi-asset operational risk stewardship
- — Manages multi-million-dollar assets under high-stakes conditions where strategic decisions impact timeline, cost, safety and environmental footprint across one or many mines.
