What this role is
Experienced hands-on technician who sets up, tests, and refines manufacturing processes and equipment with minimal supervision. At the Senior Support Specialist (S3) level, the role owns escalated / complex cases, complex or non-standard cases, and drives resolution quality on the team's hardest cases. Guides junior support informally.
What this level does
- Performs moderately difficult process-support tasks with little day-to-day instruction, exercising judgment on setup, monitoring and data collection across a production area
- Investigates recurring process issues on the floor, gathers the readings and samples needed, and recommends first-pass causes to the manufacturing engineer
- Coordinates equipment setup and qualification data collection for NPI builds, sequencing the checks needed without step-by-step direction
- Maintains the SOP and work-instruction library for an area, judging when documents are out of date and initiating revisions
- Runs and interprets basic capability and time-study analyses in Minitab and reports findings to engineering
- Knowledge applied
- Detailed knowledge of process-support procedures sufficient to perform non-routine tasks — investigating recurring issues, coordinating qualification data collection, maintaining the SOP library for an area.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Makes judgments on moderately difficult tasks; works with little instruction on daily activity and recommends first-pass causes.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Coordinates some support tasks across a production area; no formal leadership; substantial procedural understanding.
- Typical experience
- 2–4 yrs; skilled in manufacturing-engineering support.
Skills at this level
- Process Monitoring
- — Tracks running production processes against posted parameters, records gauge and cycle readings on travelers and logs, and identifies out-of-tolerance conditions for escalation.
- Time Studies
- — Times production cycles and operator steps, records the data on study worksheets, and compiles cycle-time results used to establish and improve manufacturing standards.
- SOP Documentation
- — Creates, revises and controls standard operating procedures and work instructions, ensuring the correct revision is posted at each workstation and reflects approved process changes.
- Lean Manufacturing
- — Applies waste-reduction and efficiency practices on the floor — supporting workflow, setup and layout improvements that reduce cycle time and non-value-added steps.
- PFMEA Support
- — Gathers process failure data and readings that feed process failure mode and effects analysis, and maintains the supporting records used to develop and update it.
- Statistical Data Analysis (Minitab)
- — Enters process and time-study data into Minitab, produces control and capability charts, and reports basic statistical findings to manufacturing engineers.
- Equipment Setup and Qualification Support
- — Stages fixtures and equipment, collects setup and qualification run data, and documents results during NPI trials and process characterization.
- Workcell Simulation Setup
- — Builds and maintains workcell simulation data to prove out proposed process layouts and validate sequencing before physical implementation.
- CNC/CAM Programming Support
- — Prepares and adjusts CAM setups (e.g., Mastercam, CAMWorks) and machining data used to run and prove out manufacturing processes on the floor.
- Mathematics
- — Applies arithmetic, algebra, geometry and statistics to compute cycle rates, tolerances, capability indices and process-monitoring calculations.
- Root-Cause Investigation
- — Gathers the readings and samples needed to investigate recurring floor process issues and recommends first-pass causes to engineering.
- New Product Introduction (NPI) Support
- — Supports NPI builds by running trial data collection, staging fixtures and equipment, and documenting process behavior during first production runs.
