What this role is

Entry-level support role assisting manufacturing engineers with process documentation, data collection, and basic equipment checks. At the Support Associate (S1) level, the role owns a single task type or queue, routine, well-defined requests, and drives individual transactions. None.

What this level does

  • Monitors running production processes against posted parameters and records readings on standard logs and travelers, following detailed step-by-step instructions
  • Assists engineers with time studies by timing cycles and recording data on provided worksheets under close supervision
  • Retrieves and files standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions, ensuring the correct revision is posted at each workstation
  • Flags process deviations and out-of-tolerance readings to the assigned engineer using the established escalation form
Knowledge applied
General knowledge of shop-floor routines — reading process logs, posting SOPs, recording gauge and cycle readings on standard forms.
Complexity & problem solving
Routine, prescribed tasks; answers are readily available in the work instruction or from the supervising engineer.
Collaboration & interaction
Completes own logging and monitoring tasks; standard interactions with line operators and the assigned engineer.
Typical experience
0–1 yrs; minimal experience, on-the-job training.

Skills at this level

Process Monitoring
Tracks running production processes against posted parameters, records gauge and cycle readings on travelers and logs, and identifies out-of-tolerance conditions for escalation.
Time Studies
Times production cycles and operator steps, records the data on study worksheets, and compiles cycle-time results used to establish and improve manufacturing standards.
SOP Documentation
Creates, revises and controls standard operating procedures and work instructions, ensuring the correct revision is posted at each workstation and reflects approved process changes.
Lean Manufacturing
Applies waste-reduction and efficiency practices on the floor — supporting workflow, setup and layout improvements that reduce cycle time and non-value-added steps.
PFMEA Support
Gathers process failure data and readings that feed process failure mode and effects analysis, and maintains the supporting records used to develop and update it.
Statistical Data Analysis (Minitab)
Enters process and time-study data into Minitab, produces control and capability charts, and reports basic statistical findings to manufacturing engineers.
Equipment Setup and Qualification Support
Stages fixtures and equipment, collects setup and qualification run data, and documents results during NPI trials and process characterization.
Workcell Simulation Setup
Builds and maintains workcell simulation data to prove out proposed process layouts and validate sequencing before physical implementation.
CNC/CAM Programming Support
Prepares and adjusts CAM setups (e.g., Mastercam, CAMWorks) and machining data used to run and prove out manufacturing processes on the floor.
Mathematics
Applies arithmetic, algebra, geometry and statistics to compute cycle rates, tolerances, capability indices and process-monitoring calculations.
Root-Cause Investigation
Gathers the readings and samples needed to investigate recurring floor process issues and recommends first-pass causes to engineering.
New Product Introduction (NPI) Support
Supports NPI builds by running trial data collection, staging fixtures and equipment, and documenting process behavior during first production runs.
