What this role is

Experienced technician who sources coating materials and applies protective finishes to manufactured parts and equipment with minimal supervision. At the Senior Support Specialist (S3) level, the role owns escalated / complex cases, complex or non-standard cases, and drives resolution quality on the team's hardest cases. Guides junior support informally.

What this level does

  • Independently complete moderate-to-high-complexity maintenance and repair of production equipment and building systems, proficient in at least one building trade or function, with little instruction on daily work
  • Troubleshoot non-routine equipment failures using judgment — reading PLC fault codes, interpreting drawings and electrical schematics, and isolating root cause across mechanical, electrical and control systems
  • Execute predictive maintenance tasks (vibration, thermography, lubrication analysis readings) and act on the results to schedule follow-up repairs before failure
  • Coordinate the sequence of a multi-trade repair on the floor and hand off status accurately in the CMMS so the next shift can continue
Knowledge applied
Detailed procedural and trade knowledge sufficient to perform non-routine troubleshooting across mechanical, electrical and control systems.
Complexity & problem solving
Exercises judgment on moderately difficult failures; diagnoses root cause with drawings, fault codes and predictive data.
Collaboration & interaction
Little instruction on daily work; coordinates the sequence of a repair with other trades and shifts.
Typical experience
2–4 years; skilled in the maintenance function and proficient in at least one trade.

Skills at this level

Electrical Troubleshooting
Reads circuits, schematics and control wiring to diagnose and restore electrical faults on production equipment and building systems, from basic continuity checks to isolating failures in motor and control circuits.
Mechanical Repair
Disassembles, replaces and adjusts drive components, bearings, belts and mechanical assemblies on manufacturing equipment to restore it to running condition and correct wear-driven failures.
Preventive Maintenance Execution
Carries out scheduled PM routes — lubrication, filter and belt changes, inspection and calibration — following equipment-specific checklists to prevent unplanned breakdowns.
Predictive Maintenance Techniques
Collects and interprets condition-monitoring data such as vibration, thermography and lubrication analysis to detect equipment deterioration and schedule repairs before failure occurs.
CMMS/EAM Record Keeping
Logs work orders, equipment readings, parts consumption and fault history into a Computerized Maintenance Management System so PM schedules, inventory and reliability data stay accurate across shifts.
PLC Fault Diagnosis
Reads Programmable Logic Controller fault codes and I/O status to locate control-system causes of equipment stoppages and coordinate the mechanical or electrical fix.
Root Cause Analysis
Investigates recurring equipment failures to identify the underlying mechanical, electrical or process cause and recommends corrective action to eliminate the specific loss.
Building Trades Proficiency
Applies journeyman-level skill in at least one building trade (electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC) to maintain both production equipment and facility utilities.
Spare Parts and Inventory Management
Identifies correct replacement parts, pulls them from stores, records usage and flags reorder needs to keep critical spares available for breakdown and PM work.
Maintenance Procedure Standardization
Documents and standardizes repair, PM and lubrication routines into repeatable standard work so equipment is maintained consistently across technicians and shifts.
Reliability Improvement
Uses preventive and predictive tools to target equipment deterioration and chronic losses, recommending design or method changes that extend equipment life and uptime.
Safety and Lockout/Tagout Practice
Applies plant safety procedures and energy-isolation (lockout/tagout) steps when servicing production equipment and building systems to protect self and coworkers during repairs.
