What this role is

Sets technical direction for geothermal resource development and power generation projects across the organization. At the Principal Professional (P6) level, the role owns organization-wide architecture and the hardest problems, strategic, open-ended problems shaping the technical future, and drives organization-wide. Recognized authority; multiplies many teams.

What this level does

  • Define the geoscience methodology and modeling standards adopted across geothermal programs, shaping how conceptual models are built organization-wide
  • Solve precedent-free reservoir characterization problems for frontier hydrothermal and EGS plays where standard exploration methods fail
  • Set the technical direction and long-term roadmap for the organization's geothermal exploration and resource-assessment capability
  • Influence industry practice as a recognized authority on geothermal system modeling through publications and technical leadership
  • Provide high-level mentorship to senior geoscientists and secure major multi-year funding portfolios spanning several programs
Knowledge applied
Recognized principal expert who defines the modeling methodology and resource-assessment standards used across the organization's geothermal programs.
Complexity & problem solving
Provides visionary, field-shaping problem-solving for frontier hydrothermal and EGS plays where standard exploration methods break down.
Collaboration & interaction
Influences industry and company as a recognized thought leader; mentors senior geoscientists and secures multi-year portfolios.
Typical experience
15+ years; principal expert, often PhD with industry leadership in geothermal geoscience.

Skills at this level

Geothermal Conceptual Modeling
Constructs integrated 2D and 3D conceptual models of geothermal systems by combining geologic, geochemical, geophysical, and well data in a reservoir platform such as Leapfrog to characterize subsurface heat and fluid flow.
Geothermal Exploration Data Evaluation
Evaluates the full suite of geothermal exploration data — geochemical, petrochemical, geophysical surveys, temperature gradient, test drilling, and production data — to assess resource potential and identify drilling targets.
Hydrothermal and EGS Systems Knowledge
Applies understanding of hydrothermal and enhanced geothermal (EGS) systems, structural geology, and fluid behavior to interpret reservoir characteristics and geothermal energy potential.
Geophysical Data QA/QC and Interpretation
Performs quality assurance and quality control on geophysical survey data, analyzes it, and incorporates results into geothermal system models to refine subsurface interpretation.
Geochemistry and Surface Geology Analysis
Analyzes geochemistry and surface geology data to build quality conceptual models of geothermal systems and infer subsurface conditions.
Geological Field Surveying
Conducts field studies and surveys to collect geological data and analyzes geological samples to determine their physical and chemical properties for geothermal assessment.
Geological Mapping
Creates and maintains geological maps and charts documenting surface geology and structural features of geothermal prospect areas.
Well Placement and Design Support
Analyzes and interprets subsurface data and works with the engineering team to inform geothermal well placement and design decisions.
Geothermal Laws and Regulations
Applies comprehensive understanding of the laws, regulations, and standards governing geothermal exploration, exploitation, and drilling to ensure compliant field operations.
Federal Funding Proposal Writing
Writes funding-opportunity proposals to DOE and other federal sources to secure geothermal research, development, and deployment work.
Reservoir Mapping Innovation
Proposes novel ideas and develops innovative solutions for mapping low- and high-temperature geothermal reservoirs beyond established methods.
Geothermal Analytical and Problem-Solving
Applies observational, analytical, and problem-solving skills to assess geothermal resources and resolve subsurface interpretation challenges.
Technical Project Communication
Communicates project plans, status, schedule, and budget through proposals, reports, and presentations to stakeholders, partners, and executives.
