What this role is

Senior individual contributor providing expert surveying and spatial-data guidance for oil and gas land and project activities. At the Principal Support Specialist (S5) level, the role owns function-wide support practice, program-level and systemic support problems, and drives support strategy across the function. Subject-matter authority; shapes the practice.

What this level does

  • Establish new geospatial data-handling and QA procedures for the group and standardize automation frameworks (Python/FME) so mapping products are produced consistently across projects
  • Resolve the most complex spatial data problems — reconciling incompatible datums, integrating remote-sensing and field survey data, and validating results in specialized areas such as geodetic control or hydrographic data
  • Serve as working lead and technical authority for field and office technical staff on data workflows, facilitating peer execution and providing guidance on difficult analyses
  • Coordinate technical delivery across complex mapping projects, interfacing with engineers, project managers and clients on data specifications and supplementary resources
  • Develop and disseminate new geoprocessing techniques and train technicians in their application, contributing to the group's methods and standards
Knowledge applied
Highly skilled specialist; contributes to the creation of new geoprocessing procedures, standards and automation frameworks within geomatics.
Complexity & problem solving
Develops concepts and techniques; resolves the most complex spatial data and integration issues.
Collaboration & interaction

Skills at this level

Spatial data collection and verification
Gathers and verifies spatial data from sources such as GNSS, satellite imagery and geological surveys, checking field values to ensure database integrity and accuracy.
Geospatial database management
Builds and maintains geodatabases with multiple inputs, reconciling GPS and remote-sensing sources and resolving attribute, projection and topology conflicts.
Geoprocessing and spatial analysis
Runs analytical techniques such as buffer-overlay analysis in ArcGIS or QGIS to identify patterns for urban planning, environmental impact and transportation datasets.
Cartographic production and QA
Produces maps, dashboards and report deliverables to style standards, and performs quality assurance by comparing outputs against source data to catch accuracy and metadata errors.
Geospatial scripting and automation
Writes Python or FME scripts to automate repetitive geoprocessing and data-cleaning steps within the team's mapping pipelines.
Remote-sensing data handling
Processes satellite imagery and aerial photography (e.g. in ERDAS Imagine) as supplementary sources for mapping and analysis tasks.
Project coordination and tracking
Coordinates the sequencing and delivery of mapping tasks and QA across a project, tracking progress against deadlines and priorities.
Technical communication
Explains data assessments, analytical results and recommendations in written reports and presentations to engineers, project managers and other GIS staff.
Procedure development and training
Establishes new data-handling and geoprocessing standards for the group and trains less experienced technicians in their application.
