What this role is
Senior on-site supervisor accountable for coordinating multiple mining crews and shift operations to meet production, safety, and equipment targets. At the Manager II (M2) level, the role owns an established team or sub-function, cross-project coordination and priorities, and drives group delivery and development. Manages a team; sometimes manages leads.
What this level does
- Lead a skilled crew of equipment operators and technicians across drilling, blasting, ventilation, and drainage tasks, owning tactical shift outcomes
- Coordinate field service maintenance and repairs on mining equipment (shovels, drills, loaders), scheduling line boring, welding, and hydraulics work to minimize downtime
- Assist with the design, planning, and implementation of operations such as blasting sequences, excavation, and rehabilitation in coordination with technical staff
- Monitor operational performance metrics for the team and drive corrective action on production and quality shortfalls within known operating factors
- Cooperate with maintenance, geology, and survey functions to keep the crew supplied with plans, materials, and equipment
- Knowledge applied
- Applies deeper operational judgment to lead a skilled crew across multiple task types, making calls within known operating factors on scheduling and maintenance priorities.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Exercises judgment on tactical trade-offs — production versus downtime, blast timing, drainage — within recognized parameters.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Cross-functional cooperation with maintenance, survey, and geology teams to keep the crew productive.
- Typical experience
- 2–5 years in team leadership or a specialist mining/maintenance role.

- Mechanical/electrical troubleshooting
- — Diagnoses and resolves defects in mining equipment — motors, sheaves, drives, line-bore and welding repairs — to restore field availability with minimum downtime.
- Production planning and optimization
- — Plans and optimizes open-pit and underground production, sequencing drilling, blasting, excavation, and haulage against schedule, cost, and grade targets.
- Safety and environmental compliance
- — Enforces mining safety and environmental regulations on the face, investigates incidents, and drives corrective actions to keep operations compliant.
- Mine ventilation, drainage and rehabilitation
- — Plans and implements ventilation, air-quality management, drainage, and site rehabilitation as part of safe and lawful mining operations.
- Leadership and people management
- — Supervises crews, mentors technicians, and manages large field workforces of 50–60+ personnel across shifts and sites.
- Technical documentation and software literacy
- — Reads and interprets technical SOPs and production spreadsheets, and uses fleet monitoring and mining software to track and analyze operational performance.
- Geology and mining techniques
- — Applies knowledge of geology and extraction methods to inform mining plans, ground control, and production decisions in the field.
- Blasting and drilling operations
- — Oversees drilling and blasting programs across specialized crews, coordinating blast design, sequencing, and safety controls.
- P&L and financial management
- — Manages P&L performance, operating budgets, and regional business operations for mining sites, allocating cost across fleets and projects.
- Stakeholder and regulatory engagement
- — Engages regulators, government bodies, contractors, and communities on permitting, compliance, and major operational decisions.
