What this role is
Executive responsible for overseeing all mine-site production, safety, and extraction operations across the organization. At the Director (Executive) (E1) level, the role owns a significant function with strategic authority, strategic and cross-functional, and drives function-wide enterprise impact. Executive leadership of a function.
What this level does
- Lead the complete mining operations function for a single mine or sub-region through Operations Directors/Mine Managers, owning production targets, extraction efficiency and safe day-to-day output of the pit or underground faces
- Set the functional operating strategy for the site — fleet deployment (haul trucks, loaders, drills, excavators, continuous mining machines), ore control, metal accounting and environmental compliance — and hold Directors accountable for delivery within budget
- Own the site safety program end-to-end, ensuring adherence to mining safety regulations, PPE and emergency procedures, and personally answering for serious functional consequences of incidents or production shortfalls
- Interface with major customers, regulators and geology/engineering leadership to align mine plans and workflow optimization with committed production volumes
- Approve monthly operational and technical reporting and translate mine-department trouble-shooting into corrective actions that protect committed output
- Knowledge applied
- Applies deep functional strategy for mining operations plus detailed company knowledge of a single mine/sub-region — extraction techniques, fleet operation, ore control, metal accounting and mine safety regulation — to direct a complete operations function through Directors.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Sets functional strategy and resolves site-level production, safety and compliance problems with serious functional/business consequences; trouble-shoots mine-department issues that threaten committed output.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Interfaces with other executives, major customers, regulators and geology/engineering leadership to align mine plans with production commitments.
- Typical experience
- 12–15+ years of mining operations plus proven functional and management experience running mine sites through supervisory tiers.

- Environmental Compliance Leadership
- — Sets and governs the operations' environmental compliance and sustainability posture, integrating regulatory obligations and closure requirements into production planning across producing mines.
- Ore Control and Metal Accounting Oversight
- — Governs ore control and metal-accounting discipline across sites so that extracted grade and recovery reconcile against plan, protecting the operational P&L of the mining portfolio.
- Mine Fleet and Capital Strategy
- — Sets deployment, renewal and capital-allocation strategy for heavy mining equipment (haul trucks, loaders, drills, excavators, continuous mining machines) to sustain throughput within budget across the operated fleet.
- Multi-Site Production Portfolio Management
- — Integrates production plans, targets and costs across multiple mines or regions, arbitrating throughput, safety and capital trade-offs to optimize the aggregate operating result.
- Geomechanical Risk Translation
- — Translates complex geomechanical and resource information into practical operating direction for mine planning, design, risk management and closure at the portfolio level.
- Mining Executive Stakeholder Engagement
- — Represents mining operations to boards, regulators, communities, major customers and industry bodies, negotiating critical matters and participating in enterprise strategy formation.
- Operational Reporting and Performance Governance
- — Governs monthly operational and technical reporting from mine departments, converting production, safety and cost signals into corrective actions and executive-level accountability.
- Mining Workforce Leadership
- — Builds and leads senior operations leadership through Directors and VPs, cascading standards for skill development, safety adherence and production discipline across mining personnel.
