What this role is
Leads the organization's grid balancing, demand forecasting, and rate-setting functions across multiple teams. At the Senior Director (M5) level, the role owns multiple functions or a large department, org-level trade-offs and investment, and drives multi-function results. Leads directors and managers.
What this level does
- Direct grid operations for a division, leading through department managers responsible for control-room operations, grid planning, and Control Center systems
- Define the operational methods and strategy for grid reliability and resiliency across the transmission and distribution network, with division- or company-wide implications
- Influence executives and major utility/regulatory counterparts on key grid-integration, interconnection and rate-design decisions
- Resolve complex org-wide operational issues — coordinating utility forecasting, DER, demand response and electrification into a coherent division operating plan
- Own division-level reliability performance and NERC-compliance posture, setting the standards subordinate managers operate against
- Knowledge applied
- Defines operational methods and reliability strategy for the division's transmission and distribution network with company-wide implications.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Resolves complex org-wide grid-operations issues, integrating forecasting, DER, demand response and electrification into a division operating plan.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Influences executives and major utility/regulatory counterparts on key grid decisions; leads through department managers.
- Typical experience
- 10-12+ years including second-level management and strategy work in electric power utilities (T&D, grid operations or design).
Skills at this level
- Regulatory and reliability-standard compliance
- — Manages operations against the compliance framework spanning regulatory, operations, engineering, EMS, SCADA and cyber-security requirements, ensuring NERC and grid-interconnection standards are met across control-room and planning teams.
- Real-time control-room desk operation
- — Directs the running of NOC desks — Balance & Interchange Operator, Scheduling and Dispatch — monitoring the grid in real time and coordinating hourly interchange transactions and reporting.
- Forward-looking grid planning
- — Leads utility forecasting, grid-infrastructure buildout, distributed energy resource integration, load flexibility/demand response, and vehicle/building electrification planning to sustain reliability and resiliency.
- Energy-market and grid-services optimization
- — Optimizes participation in energy markets, demand-response programs and grid services, evaluating power-procurement structures and fuel-supply resilience strategies alongside interconnection coordination.
- Grid-integration strategy
- — Owns coordination between on-site/distributed generation resources and utility grid services, designing integrated solutions and shaping how a fleet interconnects with a regional grid operator (e.g. PJM).
- Control Center systems oversight
- — Ensures high availability and reliability of critical applications and systems used within the Control Center, directing troubleshooting and maintenance through technical staff.
- Operations data analysis and reporting
- — Directs extraction and analysis of operations data — using Excel, VBA, MS Access, SQL and SSIS — to support leadership decisions, ad hoc requests and process improvement in grid operations.
- Emergency operations management
- — Manages and directs grid emergency operations, ensuring teams can forecast, escalate and respond under tight deadlines and contingency conditions while assuring reliability-standard compliance.
- Renewables forecasting and scheduling
- — Applies knowledge of wind and renewable generation challenges to forecasting and scheduling decisions, balancing variable resources against real-time reliability needs.
- Operations team leadership and budgeting
- — Builds, staffs and develops grid operations teams and manages their operating budgets, scaling from supervising individual contributors to directing through department managers across divisions.
