What this role is
Supervises a team of grid operators to maintain real-time balance between electricity supply and demand. At the Manager (Team Lead) (M1) level, the role owns a single team, day-to-day delivery and people issues, and drives team output and health. Direct people management of one team.
What this level does
- Supervise a unit of operations data analysts and control-room operators running NOC desks (Balance & Interchange, Scheduling, Dispatch), assigning shifts and monitoring the grid in real time
- Oversee daily maintenance and operations activities that support distribution and transmission line network reliability and resiliency for the assigned unit
- Ensure the team extracts operations data accurately for analysis and responds to ad hoc data requests from leadership within established procedures
- Coach individual contributors with 1-3 years of experience, checking work against established practices and reliability standards before it is reported upward
- Escalate operational anomalies and near-real-time reliability issues to higher management and track resolution of routine unit-level problems
- Knowledge applied
- Functional expert in control-room desk operations and operations data extraction; applies established maintenance and monitoring practices to keep the assigned distribution/transmission unit reliable.
- Complexity & problem solving
- Limited scope; solves routine operational problems within established procedures and reliability guidelines, escalating anomalies upward.
- Collaboration & interaction
- Daily interactions with unit staff and analyst peers; reports findings to higher management.
- Typical experience
- Functional expert with some leadership exposure; team members typically hold 1-3 years in data analytics, operations or project coordination.
Skills at this level
- Regulatory and reliability-standard compliance
- — Manages operations against the compliance framework spanning regulatory, operations, engineering, EMS, SCADA and cyber-security requirements, ensuring NERC and grid-interconnection standards are met across control-room and planning teams.
- Real-time control-room desk operation
- — Directs the running of NOC desks — Balance & Interchange Operator, Scheduling and Dispatch — monitoring the grid in real time and coordinating hourly interchange transactions and reporting.
- Forward-looking grid planning
- — Leads utility forecasting, grid-infrastructure buildout, distributed energy resource integration, load flexibility/demand response, and vehicle/building electrification planning to sustain reliability and resiliency.
- Energy-market and grid-services optimization
- — Optimizes participation in energy markets, demand-response programs and grid services, evaluating power-procurement structures and fuel-supply resilience strategies alongside interconnection coordination.
- Grid-integration strategy
- — Owns coordination between on-site/distributed generation resources and utility grid services, designing integrated solutions and shaping how a fleet interconnects with a regional grid operator (e.g. PJM).
- Control Center systems oversight
- — Ensures high availability and reliability of critical applications and systems used within the Control Center, directing troubleshooting and maintenance through technical staff.
- Operations data analysis and reporting
- — Directs extraction and analysis of operations data — using Excel, VBA, MS Access, SQL and SSIS — to support leadership decisions, ad hoc requests and process improvement in grid operations.
- Emergency operations management
- — Manages and directs grid emergency operations, ensuring teams can forecast, escalate and respond under tight deadlines and contingency conditions while assuring reliability-standard compliance.
- Renewables forecasting and scheduling
- — Applies knowledge of wind and renewable generation challenges to forecasting and scheduling decisions, balancing variable resources against real-time reliability needs.
- Operations team leadership and budgeting
- — Builds, staffs and develops grid operations teams and manages their operating budgets, scaling from supervising individual contributors to directing through department managers across divisions.
